Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz was born is Switzerland, came to the U.S.in 1846 as a lecturer, taught at Harvard and became curator of the Agassiz Museum at Cambridge. Founder of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass. Opposed to Darwin's theory of evolution. Author ofContributions to the Natural History of the United States (4 vols., 1857-62).
