Buckingham, J. H.
J. H. Buckingham was an enterprising journalist who was traveling by stagecoach from Peoria to Springfield with then-congressman Abraham Lincoln.

For miles we saw nothing but a vast prairie of what can compare to nothing else but the ocean itself. The tall grass, interspersed with fields of corn, looked like the deep sea; it seemed as if we were out of sight of land, for no house, no barn, no tree was visible, and the horizon presented by the rolling of waves in the afar - off distance. There were all sorts of flowers - as if the sun were shining upon the gay and dancing waters. The Boston Courier.
