There was an enthusiastic response and the new club, which immediately selected the name South Park Lions Club, was born. There were approximately 30 invitees in attendance at that first meeting of whom approximately 22 became charter members. Mr. Clayton S. "Smithy" Curry, Attorney, whose father had been an active Lion for many years, was elected to serve as the first president with a full slate of officers for the few months until July 1974 plus the first full year of the club's existence from July 1974 through June 1975.

Simultaneously, a new club was also being formed in an adjacent part of the City which christened itself "The Daybreak Lions Club". After only a few years of operation, that club began experiencing diminishing attendance at its meetings. After some negotiations between the clubs the two clubs decided to merge and, because of greater membership in the South Park club, retained the name of South Park Lions.

Over the twenty-seven years of its existence, South Park Lions Club has grown to and retained an average membership of approximately forty to forty-five. Because of an active dedication to fulfilling the motto of Lions Clubs International "We Serve", the club has grown to be one of the largest and most active clubs in District 31-C. Our annual Golf Tournament has increased its profit each year and, along with other fund raising activities through the years such as attic sales, broom sales, horse jumping contests, lilies at Easter sales, etc., the club has been able to meet and usually exceed the challenging goals set by our District leadership.

Our club is open to men and women who have an interest in serving their fellowmen in our community and around the world. 

We meet weekly at seven thirty every Friday morning at the Fairview Plaza Restaurant and visitors are welcome.  

The Fairview Plaza Restaurant is at 5950 Fairview Road (Corner of Park South Drive and Fairview).

Ours is a very cosmopolitan group.  We have members from many

countries and from all parts of the U.S.

The Emblem
The emblem consists of a gold letter "L" on a circular purple field. Bordering this is a circular gold area with two lion profiles facing away from the center. The word "Lion" and "International" appear at the top and bottom. The Lions are meant to face both a proud past and confident future.

The current Lions emblem was adopted at the 1919 convention. Today, Lions throughout the world are recognized by it.

As of October 31, 2000, there were 1,402,645 Lions in 44,715 clubs in 185 countries and areas.

Requirements for Membership
Membership is open to men and women of legal majority and good reputation in the community, and is by invitation only. Those interested should contact their local Lions club.

31 official editions of THE LION Magazine are published in 20 languages.
