Thanks Jack for a very interesting CW section. I've been a ham since April 2001, and used SSB and PSK31 up to now. I'm just starting out in CW (74 contacts, all DX) and think this mode is great! I hope to improve my skill in the next months, and maybe work you one day. Best wishes! Chris - ZS1DX

Great site and great info. Wish I had known that when I was a kid in Ohio, "chirping" with a couple of 6L6's, rock bound Novice and an NC-3 receiver. Been away a long, long, time. Operated MARS a while in RVN as AB8AAC and WD4SCZ, but been a good 25 years since I last had a QSO. Might have to dust off the old KWM-2A and see if it still works and get a ticket again. With the 'Callbook' on the Internet don't think I can risk 'bootlegging' like I did back as a kid before I could pass the test.

Hi Jack: A friend of mine told me about your site. It looks like you hava a lot of information available and it is really appreciated. I have been struggeling with code for a year now. The biggest problem is getting time every day to learn it. I hope you will forgive my ignorance, but I really don't know what a URL is. I'm a 55 year old who is having a difficult time learning about computers and internet. I still think a typewritter is best. But, at least I'm still willing to learn. vy fb jack es wud be psed to qso u sumtime sn! I've referred your site to some up and coming cw ops. Personally, I would add that cw was not fun until I started using a bug. The new Vibroplex bugs, honestly, aren't very good. Go to eBay, and look for a pre-end of WWII bug. For $75 to $150, you will find many fine instruments. The Vibroplex Lightning models generally have the widest speed range. If you are a slow speed op, less than 15 wpm, look for one with two weights. I've also used straight keys, iambic paddles, and keyboards, and for 15 to 40 wpm, none provide me the joy of my bug(s)! 73!

Jack, Good site. As my hearing gets worse and SSB becomes a sort of undifferiented growl, CW becomes more and more important to me. So I am looking to improve my technique (It can use it.). I now use CW in over 50% of my contacts, and expect that percent to go much higher soon. Thanks for the good advice. 73, KD1XU

Hi Jack, I am new to CW. I have been licensed in one way or another since 1997 but have only been on CW since the New Year. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your write up on Morse. I would love to see it in the RSGB Yearbook. I have taken several hints from the article and have put in my favourites list to refer to in the future.

MAESTEG, WALES - Saturday, January 26, 2002 at 23:48:11 (EST)

Hi Jack, Your thoughtfully written piece has an attention to detail that is missing from most other beginners guides to CW and in my opinion should be permanently in the ARRL Handbook. My own experience with CW led me to “key fright” after just a few QSO’s as soon as I got my call upgraded from tech call to an unrestricted license. I found that my 6 weeks of 15 minutes daily practise with tapes and copying the local nightly CW practise nets allowed me to proficiently copy random groups of 5 letters and plain English and (just) pass the test at 10wpm but not prepare me for a normal CW QSO. I could not make sense of the shorthand the other ops were using and at the same time decode and think of what to say. It really did seem, as someone in the US coast guard was quoted as saying “a secret handshake”. Simple facts such as how long a QSO at slow speed can take and the example QSO’s as well as the simple mechanics of a CW QSO demystify the process. The note that you actually write down all of your QSO is such a basic tip that would have helped me move to the next stage at the time. With the advent of computer CW practise programs (which make it very easy to learn CW or brush up a forgotten skill) and my revived interest in QRP on HF and EME weak signal comms, I have decided to brush the dust off my old key and have some fun. 73 de VK6EN

Great insight! Very helpful and encouraging. I haven't mastered 5wpm yet, don't have a tx, just passed the watered down Tech exam. When I get cw certified, I won't get on the air without you guide in print next to me. Fantantastic! BTW, working at HCJB would be a real pleasure, serving Him is.
